Rent Arrears

What Happens If You Don’t Pay Your Rent?

As a tenant (Housing Association or private landlord), under the terms of your tenancy agreement you have to pay your rent.

If you are on a low income or claiming benefits then it is up to you to make a claim for Housing Benefits and to provide all of the relevant information to Housing Benefits.

You can pay your rent in many ways to suit your own circumstances. To do this you must contact your landlord but it is up to you to arrange payment of rent to your landlord.

If you do not pay your rent you will be in breech of your tenancy agreement.

If you are in breech of your tenancy agreement you will face legal action in the form of POSSESSION PROCEEDINGS which may result in you being EVICTED from your home.

If you are evicted from your home because of rent arrears Housing Options may not have to rehouse you because by not paying your rent you may be considered as “intentionally homeless”.

Housing Options will offer you advice, and you may only be eligible for Temporary Accommodation for a short period of time. After this you will have to find your own accommodation for example you may have to consider renting from a private landlord or staying with friends and family.
