Join up, join in and Be Social!

10 May 2017

We’ve launched Be Social, a fun and affordable membership club encouraging over 50s to be active, have fun and make new friends in Trafford.

Activities include days out, exercise and craft classes, lunches and afternoon teas, trips to the theatre or cinema, chosen in partnership with members so there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Members can also take advantage of exclusive discounts with local businesses and receive a newsletter of events each month, all for less than £1 a week.

There are lots of great health and wellbeing benefits too. Leading an active social life with psychical activity can increase independence, improve memory and reduce loneliness and depression.

People having a meal at the be social launch eventMember, Pamela Barnes (age 63) says: “Being a member of Be Social feels like I’m part of a small community, I get to meet new people that have the same interests as me and I feel a lot more independent.”

Be Social has also been praised by The Silver Line, a 24 hour helpline for older people set up by Dame Esther Rantzen in 2013. CEO of The Silver Line, Sophie Andrews, says: "We receive over 10,000 weekly calls from over-60s and know that hearing a human voice is the first step to breaking down the wall of isolation. We also recognise there’s no substitute for meeting people face-to-face and schemes such as Be Social offer people the opportunity to build vital social connections and develop a community network to support them."

Executive Director for Health & Social Care, Hilary Barrett, says: “Be Social is part of our TrustCare offer designed to help people live life to the full. So far, response to has been fantastic and we encourage anyone who might be thinking about it to join in or share details of the scheme with friends or family who might be interested.”

The growing programme of activities and events will be available across Trafford and Greater Manchester and we’re happy to link up members to share taxis and lifts. You don’t have to be a Trafford Housing Trust resident either.
