Latest update - Tower blocks fire safety

27 June 2017

important safety information for our residents living in our tower blocks

We sent you a letter last week to update you on the actions we’re taking to make sure you’re safe in the event of an emergency. These actions included further Fire Risk Assessments and testing cladding on our buildings (where we have it) in order to make sure our customers are safe in their homes.

Today we received information from these assessments that has led us to reconsider whether the ‘Stay Put’ advice we have always given remains the best guidance for your building. We continue to conduct extensive tests across all of our tower blocks, and the results of these tests may well give us the confidence required to return to the ‘Stay Put’ guidance. However, with immediate effect and until we advise you otherwise, please note the following important information:

  • We are introducing Wardens in each of our tower blocks. In the unlikely event of a fire, they will sound a horn and commence the evacuation of the building.
  • To keep everyone safe as they move down the stairwell, and to prioritise the safety of those customers who are closest to the fire, the Warden will evacuate the building in the following order:
    • The floor where the fire is;
    • The floors directly above and below the fire;
    • All other floors.
  • Over the next 24 hours a map will be posted on the notice board in the main entrance that will show you where the Muster Points are outside of the building. It is very important that you go directly to the Muster Point in order that we and the emergency services can check that you have safely left the building. It is also important that you let the emergency services know immediately if someone has not been able to leave your property.
  • If for any reason the Warden is not present, please evacuate the building as quickly and safely as you can. Remember, do not use the lifts.

We do appreciate that the tragic news about the Grenfell Tower and how letters such as this could be troubling for you. However, please trust that we are doing everything we can, as fast as we can to make sure our tower blocks provide safe and secure homes for our customers. One of our team may have visited you today to test your smoke detector and ask for current contact details and information about any extra help you may need to leave your property in the unlikely event of a fire. If you weren’t at home today and have received a card through the letterbox, please do call us to confirm when we can come to test your smoke detector, or to let us know if you would need extra help. We’re available from 8am til 8pm on 0300 777 7777.

In the meantime, please also remember the things you can do in your own home to help keep you and your neighbours safe. Please read our Fire safety in towerblocks section for more information.

If you have any questions about this letter, please don’t hesitate to talk to your local Housing Officer or give us a call on the number above. We’ll do whatever we can to put your mind at rest.
