Stretford House rallies for a good cause

01 July 2014

_MG_1144.jpgOn the evening of Saturday 21st June hundreds of green and white balloons in Macmillan colours could be seen floating above Stretford House. Tied to the balloons were hundreds of heartfelt messages from residents in memory of loved ones.

This lovely gesture which helped to raise over £1500 for Macmillan was the inspiration of THT caretaker John Rogers and his wife Georgina.  What started as a sponsored night in for Macmillan with a few friends snowballed into a significant fundraising activity involving Stretford House residents led by Jan Howells and Mary Fleming and THT staff linked to the building.

A special charity gala dinner on the roof of Stretford House was a focal point of the fundraising, with the release of the balloons into the heavens being one of the high points of the evening. Astroturf and garden furniture were brought in to give the dining area a special rooftop garden feel!

John, who has raised money for various charities over the years, explains that “it was very much a team effort” and, though the idea to launch the balloons for Macmillan was his, there were many people who worked tirelessly to make things happen: _MG_1091.jpg“I want to say a special thank you to my wife Georgina who has been with me all the way and to Jan Howell and Mary Fleming for all their help in transforming this from a quiet affair for a few friends into a major event bringing out all the goodwill and energy of Stretford House residents”.

John also explains that due to the generosity of donors every penny of the £10 per head charged for the Saturday event will go to Macmillan. He is also clearly thrilled that, due to various other forms of help, including a contribution from THT and other local businesses ,  the final total raised is much higher than anticipated. .
