Old Trafford Masterplan

Background:

Over the past 2 years Trafford Council, the Old Trafford Neighbourhood Management Board and Trafford Housing Trust have been running a project to help develop a Masterplan for the Old Trafford Area.

The aim is to address the issues in the area that have been recognised as problems for the Community. The goal is to create long-lasting and safe communities with quality housing, an excellent environment, better access to training and employment and improved facilities.

General overview:

The Trust and the Council want to help improve the area of Old Trafford for the people who live there and for future people who move to the area. This will include:

  • Improvements to housing in the area to offer modern housing that meets peoples needs in terms of size and quality
  • Offering improved links to training and jobs in the local area
  • Improving the local environment and availability of shops and facilities

To achieve this the Trust and the Council have undertaken a study of Old Trafford, involving local residents to find out how best the area can be improved.  The Old Trafford Area has been spilt into nine small projects to indentify how the overall aims can be achieved. The projects in this plan are general ideas of what can be achieved and will need further developing before any works take place. It is likely that the overall process will take between 10-15 years to achieve.

What improvements will be made to the Old Trafford Area

To start this process off the Trust and the Council have agreed to concentrate on the Tamworth area and Trafford and Rylands Court and Essex Way on Stretford Road. With this in mind it has been agreed to:

  • Demolish the 4 bird blocks, Osprey, Raven, Eagle and Falcon with the aspiration to replace them with good quality family housing in the local area
  • Demolish Trafford and Ryland's Court with the aim to review the needs of the area which may include replacing with family accommodation or a much needed retail hub
  • Retain the balcony blocks, including Princess and Empress Courts and investing more money in these to improve the quality by bringing them up to the decent homes and Trafford Standard
  • Make improvements to the local open space to make it safer. Improving the road connections and parking on the Tamworth estate
