Understanding the social housing list can be tricky as each housing association, or local council has its own rules and systems.
Trafford Council uses the banding system and they house individuals and families in relation to their needs. If you have any questions, please call Housing Options Services Trafford (HOST) on 0161 912 2230.
How do I apply for the housing list?
To apply for the housing list, you will need to make an application online through HOSTs online form. HOST will review your application and contact you to let you know what priority band your application has been placed in. You will then be able to view and bid on suitable properties in Trafford.
To be considered for a property, you must bid on it through HOST.
Bidding is part of the choice-based letting system. This system puts you in control of the properties you bid on and allows you to express interest in properties that meet your needs and are in areas you wish to live. To bid for homes outside of Trafford, please speak to the appropriate housing association or the council in that area.
Who is eligible to apply to go on the housing list?
Anyone can apply for social housing. You can do this by making an application through HOSTs online form. If you need to discuss your application, please call HOST on 0161 912 2230.
How does the housing list system work?
The housing list system is split into bands. A band is a way of identifying people by housing circumstances and needs. When you register to HOST, your application will be assessed, and you will be placed into one of five bands.
Your allocated band will be used to assess an order of priority when bidding for properties.
For more information about the banding scheme, please read page 13 of the Trafford Allocations Policy
Can I be refused an application for the housing list?
Some people cannot be included on the housing list. These are:
- Certain people who are subject to Immigration Control under the 1996 Asylum and Immigration Act
- Certain people from abroad who are not subject to immigration control but who are not habitually resident in the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or the Republic of Ireland
- People (including members of their household) who have been guilty of unacceptable behaviour that makes them unsuitable to be a tenant
If you need to discuss any of the criteria listed above, please call HOST on 0161 912 2230.
How does HOST and Trafford Housing Trust work together?
HOST has a responsibility to fulfill the council’s statutory duty and provide housing to those in urgent need. We are one of several landlords who help HOST to do this by advertising a portion of our social housing properties through their service.
